Privacy Policy
Last updated — July 22, 2026
Read this if you want to know what backseatatlas.com does with data. Backseat Atlas publishes family road trips across the United States, and this page covers collection, use, sharing, and your options.
Rights and Requests
Whichever framework applies to you — UK/EU GDPR, California’s CCPA/CPRA, or another US state law — you can generally request access, correction, deletion, or portability of your data, object to particular uses, and opt out of sale or sharing for advertising. Global Privacy Control signals are honoured without you needing to contact us. Our State Privacy Notice and Do Not Sell or Share page go further.
Children
Backseat Atlas is not aimed at children and is not intended for use by anyone under 13, or under 16 where that is the applicable age. We do not knowingly gather information from children, and anything of that kind that reaches us is deleted.
Email Preferences
The newsletter is confirmed opt-in: you enter an address, we email to check it was really you, and only then are you added. Every message we send carries a one-click unsubscribe and our postal address. Leaving is immediate and permanent.
Data We Gather
Some information arrives without you doing anything: standard web-server and analytics records covering IP address, device, browser, rough location and pages viewed. Other information arrives because you sent it — newsletter signups, comment fields, and email correspondence.
- On the point most relevant to families planning a drive — we do not collect precise device location – route pages are static and are not personalised to where you are reading from.
Cookies and Tracking
For anything cookie-related, our Cookie Policy is the document that applies.
-
Where advertising is served, third-party vendors including Google may use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this and other websites. Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to this site and/or other sites on the internet. You may opt out of personalised advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings, or opt out of a third-party vendor’s use of cookies for personalised advertising at www.aboutads.info.
How Long We Keep It
Data lifespans are tied to purpose — analytics on the provider’s expiry schedule, email addresses until you leave the list, comments until they are taken down. Protection is by way of restricted access and encrypted transport, applied proportionately. No online service can be perfectly secure.
How It Gets Used
It is used to run the site, to improve what we publish by seeing which pages are read, to honour newsletter subscriptions, and to serve advertising where that is in place.
Others in the Chain
This site may involve a hosting provider, an analytics provider, an email service (only if you subscribe), and advertising partners (only where advertising is served). Some process data strictly on our behalf; advertising and analytics vendors typically act as controllers in their own right.
